There is an art to any type of training whether it be lifting, swimming, biking or running. As I have began to increase my runs above 3 miles I noticed that the proper shoes and the way to lace them are essential. I started running with NIKE frees because while Nike is a go to brand for any type of training. It a brand that everyone knows and you grow up wanting. My Nike’s held up but my knees were taking a beating. I wasn’t sure what was going on since I had never taken up running for fun, not ever, not even in high school.
I told one of my boxing partners what was going on and he suggested to try the five finger shoes. He said that he had the same type of problems as I was having and those shoes seemed to help him. So I took my happy butt to the mall and bought a pair, needless to say, they did not work for me. In fact it was the opposite, they lasted about 3 runs and than my knees started to get worse. I do not know why I thought what worked for him would work for me. I mean we are taught from very found that no two people are the say, so therefore, why would my running be the same as his. It was time to get a professional opinion, so I took a trip with my friend to a store called SOLE TO SOLE. At this store they measure you for the CORRECT type of shoe for your foot and your type of running style. They began by having me stand on this device and I believe it reads your feet arches, and than they have you run on a treadmill for 15 seconds to watch your stride. Thank goodness I went to a professional, I would have spent a lot of money trying different shoes and probably would have never picked out the shoes that they recommend for me. I have no idea why it took me so long to get a professional opinion, especially since the shoe assessment was FREE.
I highly recommend that if you are wanting to start running that you find a local running store that can help you find the perfect shoe for you. Invest in a good pair of shoes, ASAP, do not wait! You will end up having issues with your knees and feet if you do not invest in a proper pair of shoes. Plus you probably will never hit your true running potential.
Now once you have invested in an amazing pair of running shoes, the next thing to know for distance running is how to lace your shoes. Remember I said running is an art, there are multiple parts to an art piece in order to make it complete.
